Roseland Park holds memories of sports triumphs, joyous times, and playful youth activities for many people in the community. Please help us give the children of Jamestown another place to play.

Save Roseland Park Playground
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Community Acts to Restore Roseland Park
Jamestown, NY – February 4, 2010—School children should have a safe and inviting place to play, according to Paula Hofgren, the pioneer of the Roseland Park Playground Project.
Roseland Park one of the City of Jamestown Parks, which is located on Fluvanna Avenue in Jamestown, New York, has been in existence since the early 1900s. Years ago, the park was home to an ice-skating rink that drew people from hundreds of miles away. The park also had tennis courts, baseball fields, and a playground that provided enjoyment for people of all ages.
Now, the skating rink is long gone, the tennis courts have fallen apart, and overgrown weeds have consumed the hillside with just a few pieces of unsafe playground equipment left. Even though the area is now unsafe, children have to play somewhere, so they are still going to Roseland Park. Area baseball, football, and cheerleading teams use the fields for practices and games, while the neighborhood children play on dated playground equipment. For some neighborhood children, Roseland Park Playground is the only place to play outside that they have access to.
Paula Hofgren, who has lived near Roseland Park for sixty years, has been working on restoring the playground to its glory since 2007. In an effort to raise $125,000, Mrs. Hofgren has organized area parents, spoken with local legislators, and encouraged area business leaders to help with the fundraising challenge. Hofgren said, “I spend so much time on this project, because the children need a place to play.”
In an effort to help Mrs. Hofgren reach her goal and to get a new playground built for the children of Jamestown, Gretchen Lindell, Jamestown Business College faculty member, is working with her web development class this term to create and design a website for the Roseland Park Playground Project. “It is hard not to get involved, when Paul is so passionate about this cause,” said Lindell.
The website will provide information regarding the restoration project, upcoming fundraising events, volunteer sign-up area, and many other items.
The website’s address is http://www.RoselandPlayround.org, and it will be “going live” on February 23, 2010.
